Study Opportunities and Celebrating One Year of Approaching Jerusalem
One year of Approaching Jerusalem
On June 10, 2022, I started this newsletter as a landing pad for my own thoughts and questions about historical Jerusalem. It was not clear to me that anyone would share my particular set of interests or value anything I might have to say about them. One year later, nearly 350 people have subscribed, for which I am both surprised and grateful. I want to offer a hearty thanks to each of you and to anyone who has taken the time to read, share, or recommend this newsletter. A special dose of gratitude is due to paid subscribers, patrons, and anyone who has sent one-time monetary support. Without such support, this venture would not be possible. Writing has become a part of my life’s rhythms, and a long list of publication topics is waiting in the queue. Looking ahead, I see only the open road and potential for new outlets to explore a city that demands a lifetime of attention and appreciation.
With gratitude,
Chandler
Let’s study Jerusalem together
I’m happy to invite you to participate in two opportunities to study historical Jerusalem with me over the coming months.
Online class: Biblical Jerusalem and Its Exploration offered through Jerusalem University College
This class, previously titled Contexts of the Holy City, is an introduction to the history of biblical Jerusalem and its research. Participants will learn the geography of the city and its rural hinterland, and we will survey key historical snapshots of Jerusalem during the biblical period (from the earliest days to the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans in 70 CE). The course will be offered for credit or audit and will take place Monday nights from 8:00-10:30pm Eastern Time beginning August 28. More information is available here, including details of other fantastic JUC online courses being offered during the fall semester. This eight-day study program was crafted with an emphasis on Jerusalem’s archaeological, geographical, and historical contexts. We will spend six days in and around the historical basin in Jerusalem, followed by a two-day excursion to the Galilee. I will serve as the main instructor for the program with on-site lectures from Petra Heldt, Orit Peleg-Barkat, Yiftah Shalev, Dieter Vieweger, and Amit Re’em in their areas of specialty. I have wanted to teach a short-term program focused on Jerusalem for a long time and am very excited to be able to do so next year. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Register here.
